April is Poetry Month
Students can embrace their "poet within" this month in a number of ways. We will have a "Poet-Tree" in the library onto which they can place their personally-created poem for display for all to enjoy. Students can also complete a poetry log and turn it into the library for a small prize. April 30 is National Poem in Your Pocket Day. Students and staff will be asked to carry a poem in their pocket and share it with their friends and teachers should they be asked to do so. Finally, for students in Grades 4 and 5, Roby Elementary is sponsoring our first Poetry Slam, where students create and perform their poetry for their peers during their lunch time on April 30. All information and necessary forms can be found here!

Backyard Spring Book Fair
"Building Better Readers"
"Oh, the Places You'll Go"
March 2 marks what would have been Dr. Seuss' 111 birthday. Every year at Roby Elementary School we celebrate the fun that Dr. Seuss brought to reading for children. As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publication of his very famous book, Oh, the Places You'll Go, we will be asking students to think about how they see themselves in the future. What do they want to be when they grow up? What career or profession do they see themselves in?
Love Your Library
Mrs. Hunt, 2/3 teacher at Roby, developed this month's Reading Challenge. Students are to keep track of the books they check out from the library on the attached log. Once they read the book, they are to write on the bookmark (also attached) what they thought about the book: why did they chose it, what did they like about it, why should another student check it out? When they return the book, they leave the bookmark in it so the next student who checks out that item can receive the note and the bookmark. Students who read five books checked out from the library get their picture posted on the Wall of Fame by the front library doors.

January is Book Awards Month
The Caldecott and Newbery Awards are two of the biggest awards given to books for children. The awards ceremony will be on February 2, 2015. In order to acquaint students with quality literature, we are putting out a challenge for reading some of these great titles. The Caldecott Kids challenge is for students grades K-2, and the Award Awareness challenge is for students grades 4-5. Grade 3 students can choose to do either challenge. See the attached documents for more information.
